A Family Friendly Guide for Lake Garda

Updated July 2026

My Tailored Recommendations

Recently, I had the pleasure of designing a family holiday to the beautiful shores of Lake Garda. Every itinerary I create is tailored around the people travelling, their pace, and the experiences they enjoy most. In this case, the brief was simple: a relaxing family escape filled with beautiful scenery, authentic Italian food, and activities suitable for everyone.

Whether you’re planning your first visit or returning to discover more of Italy’s largest lake, here’s some inspiration from the itinerary I created.

As a well-connected travel designer, I work with trusted partners across Lake Garda—from charming lakeside apartments to exceptional private villas and luxury hotels—allowing every trip to be completely tailored to your family.

Why Lake Garda?

Lake Garda offers something few destinations can match.

Picturesque villages sit between dramatic mountains and crystal-clear water, while excellent restaurants, scenic drives, outdoor adventures and luxury wellness hotels make it ideal for families, couples and multi-generational holidays alike. It feels as scenic and impressive as Lake Como but has a more welcoming authentic Italian feel, without the excessive price tag.

Depending on where you stay, each part of the lake offers its own unique character.

Limone sul Garda

One of the prettiest villages on Lake Garda, Limone sul Garda is famous for its colourful waterfront, charming alleyways and centuries-old lemon groves. I often suggest our clients to stay close to this village.

Don’t miss

  • Visit Limonaia del Castèl, the historic lemon terraces overlooking the lake.
  • Walk or cycle the spectacular suspended lakeside pathway.
  • Browse local boutiques selling handmade limoncello, olive oil and regional delicacies.
  • Enjoy the relaxed waterfront promenade with plenty of cafés and gelato stops.

Olive Oil Tasting

While visiting Limone, I highly recommend stopping at a local olive oil producer. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn about traditional production methods while sampling some of the region’s finest extra virgin olive oils.

Restaurants I Recommend

  • Casa Bistrot L’Andrunel
  • Al Vecchio Fontec
  • Hostaria al Buongusto

As always, I’m happy to arrange restaurant reservations before you travel.

Relax at Lefay Resort & SPA

Just above the village of Gargnano, close to Limanaia, sits one of my favourite wellness hotels in Italy.

Lefay Resort & SPA Lago di Garda is widely regarded as the finest spa destination on the lake, offering panoramic views, indoor and outdoor pools, exceptional wellness facilities and an extensive treatment menu. Great to bring children as they can enjoy the vast swimming pools whilst one of the parents can indulge in their award-winning treatments.

Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, spending half a day here makes for a wonderful break between sightseeing.

Tremosine

Tremosine sits dramatically high above the lake and is home to some of the most spectacular viewpoints in northern Italy.

Highlights

  • Terrazza del Brivido, a viewing platform suspended hundreds of metres above Lake Garda.
  • Strada della Forra, often described as one of Europe’s most beautiful roads and featured in the James Bond film Quantum of Solace.

Lunch Recommendation

Pizzeria Terrazza del Brivido offers unforgettable lake views alongside authentic local cuisine.

Northern Lake Garda

Riva del Garda

Surrounded by dramatic mountains, Riva del Garda combines lakeside charm with an active outdoor atmosphere.

Highlights

  • Wander through the beautiful historic centre.
  • Enjoy the lively waterfront promenade.
  • Explore family-friendly cycling routes.
  • Discover waterfalls and scenic hiking trails.
  • Visit local cafés, boutiques and restaurants.
  • Try sailing, kayaking or windsurfing on the lake.

Malcesine

Malcesine is one of the most photogenic towns on Lake Garda which should be on your map of Lake Garda.

Highlights

  • Ride the Monte Baldo Cable Car for spectacular panoramic views.
  • Explore the medieval Scaliger Castle.
  • Relax at harbourfront cafés.
  • Enjoy paddleboarding, kayaking or boat hire.

Southern Lake Garda

Sirmione

Arguably the lake’s most famous destination, Sirmione is known for its historic centre, lakeside atmosphere and impressive medieval castle. However, be aware that it gets busy in the summer so let me help you pick the best time of the year for a visit.

Highlights

  • Visit Scaliger Castle.
  • Wander the narrow cobbled streets.
  • Enjoy lakefront restaurants.
  • Take a private boat tour around the peninsula.

Parco Giardino Sigurtà

One of Italy’s most beautiful landscaped gardens, this makes an excellent day trip for families.

Highlights

  • Beautiful flower gardens.
  • Scenic lakes and walking paths.
  • Bicycle and golf cart hire.
  • Plenty of open space for children to explore.

Adventure Activities for Families

For families looking for something more active, the northern part of Lake Garda offers several fantastic outdoor adventure parks.

Flying Frogs Adventure Park

Perfect for younger children and teenagers, with tree-top courses, climbing challenges and zip lines.

Adventure Park Garda

One of the largest adventure parks in the region, offering courses suitable for all ages.

Busatte Adventure Park

Famous for its spectacular suspended walkways and incredible cliffside lake views near Torbole.

Rimbalzello Adventure Park

A brilliant family-friendly park combining climbing courses, nature trails and outdoor activities.

Spend a Day on the Water

No visit to Lake Garda feels complete without exploring it from the lake itself.

I can arrange:

  • Self-drive boats
  • Private luxury boat charters
  • Ferry itineraries between lakeside villages
  • Swimming stops in secluded bays
  • Sunset cruises

Seeing the colourful villages from the water offers a completely different perspective—and is often one of the highlights of the trip.

Restaurants Worth Booking

Some of my favourite restaurants around this part of the lake include:

  • La Darsena
  • Il Fagiano (Michelin-starred fine dining)
  • Il Fiore di Zucca (excellent gluten-free menu)

Advance reservations are highly recommended during the summer months, and I’m always happy to arrange them as part of your itinerary.
